Statement
When done from a place of honesty and emotional vulnerability, I believe cinema can capture something as visible at the surface level but also as fleeting as identity. This is especially the case for those who got their whole identity recontextualized when they relocated to a different country, or more specifically, to a city such as Los Angeles.
Even in a society that is essentially pro-individualism, our identities are still interdependent. Through genuine connections (Daniel, the driver, reenacting himself, and, more briefly, Dulce, the café owner) but also by playfully acknowledging its representational quality, this autofiction transitions from existential distress to a promise, in which the joy of filmmaking is finally reclaimed.
